What Is Beauty Counter?

Beautycounter is a beauty products company founded by Gregg Renfrew in March of 2013 in efforts to get cleaner beauty products into the hands of everyone. Not only does Beautycounter produce cleaner, safer products, they have made it their mission to advocate for reforms to the outdated regulations governing the beauty industry, which has been a pillar of their business from day one.

The scary truth is that there are very few regulations surrounding the beauty industry. The FDA requires no premarket review of the safety of cosmetics. Instead, the cosmetics industry is supposed to “self police” through its Cosmetics Ingredients Review Panel. Over the 36 years that this has been in place, the panel has rejected only 11 ingredients. In contrast, the European Union has banned hundreds of chemicals in cosmetics. Personal care products are manufactured with over 10,500 unique ingredients, many of which are known carcinogens, endocrine disruptors, known toxins and much more and it is LEGAL! So basically, if you want to create a skin care product and sell it on-line, go right ahead, there is not much stopping you!

Some common ingredients used in your daily skin care and beauty products:

  • Formaldehyde – a popular ingredient used as a preservative in cosmetics. A known carcinogen that is also linked to asthma, neurotoxicity, and developmental toxicity. Present where quaternium-15, DMDM hydantoin, imidazolidinyl urea, diazolidinyl urea, sodium hydroxymethylglycinate, 2-bromo-2-nitropropane-1,3 diol (Bronopol), and several other preservatives are listed. Found in: shampoo, body wash, bubble bath.
  • Synthetic flavor or fragrance – An engineered scent or flavoring agent that may contain any combination of 3,000-plus stock chemical ingredients, including hormone disruptors and allergens. Fragrance formulas are protected under federal law’s classification of trade secrets and therefore can remain undisclosed. Found in: all types of cosmetics. * This is also why I use doTERRA essential oils instead of perfume or air fresheners! You can read more about that here.
  • Toluene – A volatile petrochemical solvent that is toxic to the immune system and can cause birth defects. Found in: nail polish. ( I love Sundays and Ten over Ten non-toxic nail polish)

I am sharing this information with you to inform you and to encourage you to make the switch to a healthier option!

After I had brain surgery, I was on a MISSION to heal my body. I researched EVERYTHING, from the toxic air we breathe, the polluted water we drink, the toxic chemicals in our beauty care, cleaning products, clothing, furniture, food..etc you name it I was researching it. I concluded, there is a ton of junk out there being falsing marketed to us, and I knew I could do WAY better with my choices, and then in turn I was confident it would promote healing within my body. (spoiler alert – I was right!)

There are some things we cannot control, but for those we can, it is our responsibility to not blinding trust what we hear, but to do our own research and make the best decisions for ourselves and loved ones.

Our health is our biggest asset. Our skin is the largest organ in our body. Did you know that? It’s also part of our microbiome, which means what we put on our skin affects our gut health! It affects everything! We work out, eat healthy, meditate etc, but then cover our bodies in harmful ingredients that cause disease and illness. There is a lack of regulation that needs to change, and Beautycounter is on it!

Recently I became a beautycounter consultant because I felt it was my personal responsibility to educate and help spread the word and get safer products into the hands of my followers.
