Knowledge is power!
Hey guys! It has been a while since I have written a new blog post! Welcome back! If you have followed my health journey and know my background, then you can go ahead and skip to the third paragraph. If this is your first time reading one of my blog posts, WELCOME!…and stick around for a brief overview.
Three years ago I was living in New York City, healthy, happy and leading a busy lifestyle. I had a job in the fashion industry, loved waking up and running 6-7 miles in central park before work, and enjoyed socializing on the on weekends with my friends. Suddenly (very suddenly) I started to not feel well. I had numbness in my legs, extreme bouts of vertigo, uncomfortable body aches, pain in my joints, intense feelings of exhaustion and fatigue, and major brain fog. It felt like an invader came into my body and was sucking all the energy and life out of me. I went to the doctor and was told I was fine. All my blood work came back normal and they concluded I must have had a virus that was still working its way out of body. After a month or two of still not feeling well, and my symptoms worsening, I went to a neurologist who ran a bunch of more tests and also concluded I also was fine; but given my symptoms suggested I maybe have lyme disease. I was not buying it, I knew in my gut there was something else going on and I wasn’t willing to take a “guess” as my diagnosis. So I went to another specialist, and another and another and another… and then almost a year later, multiple tests, leave from work, a lifestyle depleted of things I enjoy and still no answers; I was feeling very helpless and scared. I felt my body was failing me and because I had no idea what was going on, I was not able to heal myself. I have since learned our bodies are always working FOR us, never against us, but knowing what is going on is so powerful in order to assist in HEALING.
Finally over a year of fighting for answers, it was discovered I had a malformation of blood vessels in my brain called a cavernoma that had been slowly bleeding on and off, therefore causing my mysterious symptoms. Two weeks after receiving that news, the small bleed hemorrhaged extremely large and I was rushed into emergency brain surgery to save my life. Thankfully it was operable and surgery went as planned, which I am forever grateful for!
Through this whole experience, I learned A LOT, but one of the most important things I learned is that KNOWLEDGE IS POWER. Understanding what is going with your body gives you the power to be able to heal it. It gives you the freedom to be able to seek out the type of care you need to assist your body in healing. The year of pain and suffering with no answers was more difficult and painful (emotionally & physically) than brain surgery and recovery. Once I had brain surgery, I then was able to get the correct support team and do all the research I needed to heal my body how I wanted to and needed to.
Since having brain surgery, I have put my health as my number one priority and now being a health coach, I encourage others to do the same. One of my biggest question and concern after surgery was – will my body be able to bare children and if so, am I at high risk? I had never thought about it before, but given my body had just gone through a tremendous amount of trauma, I was fearful it had an affect on my ability to have children. My doctor assured me it is safe for me to get pregnant and delivery will be handled cautiously. I was thankful and grateful to hear that news, however, one thing I did not ever think about was – is my body even able to get pregnant? How do I know my hormones are in check? Am I ovulating? What is my egg reserve? I had never asked myself these questions before. I always assumed I would try, get pregnant and that would be that – out would pop a baby. However, that is not the case for many woman. I am currently 30 years old and although I am not ready for children yet, I had never thought about pregnancy until recently, and there were so many questions I had that I did not have the answer to. I wanted to understand my fertility so my husband and I can plan our future accordingly.
This is when I discovered Modern Fertility. Modern Fertility is a female-founded women’s health company focused on getting modern women access to fertility testing, so they can plan their lives and careers on their own terms. Modern Fertility offers you the ability to do at home fertility testing and provides you with the results so you know how to properly plan for your future.
When I learned about this, I knew I had to do it because it would give me the information I need to understand what is going on with my body, and then I will be able to take appropriate action if necessary to prepare my body to get pregnant eventually.
Some may ask “why can’t you go to your doctor and ask for these tests?” Unfortunately, generally speaking, proactive fertility hormone tests are not covered by federal insurance. In some states, reactive “infertility” testing can be covered—but in most cases you have to prove that you’ve been trying to get pregnant for a year! There is a lot of red tape! That should not be the case. Every woman deserves to understand her fertility.
There is so much to the Modern Fertility experience – it’s “not just a test”. There’s a weekly webinar you can attend to learn more about your results, a 1:1 call with a fertility nurse (for free!), a community of women who are asking the same questions you are and sharing stories and advice. For me, it was an very easy decision to take the test.
How it works:
- You will sign up on their website and order your test. You will be asked to fill out a questionnaire and a doctor at Modern Fertility will review it to understands more about you. From the information provide, the doctor is able to give you an accurate test based on your birth control. You can choose a test you can take at home or opt to take the test at a local Quest Diagnostics lab.
- Once you receive the test in the mail it is time to test! If you’re taking the test at home, follow the instructions and pop your sample in the mail. If you prefer to go to a lab, you’ll do a standard draw at Quest.
- Whether you test at home or in a lab, your results will be reviewed by a doctor and sent to your private dashboard in a few days to review.
- After you receive the results, you have the option to attend a webinar that discusses how to read your results. You also have an opportunity to schedule a 1:1 call with a fertility nurse. I did both and it was very helpful!
Overall, I had a very positive experience with using Modern Fertility. Everyone at Modern Fertility is very helpful and available to answer any questions you may have along the way. The test was very easy to do. I did mine at home. It is a simple finger prick. (Do make sure you follow the directions to make sure you get enough blood for testing – I jumped on my trampoline to make sure I had good blood flow ;-)). After I did the rest, I popped it in the mail and I received my results back within a week. The webinar and 1:1 talk with the fertility nurse afterwards was extremely helpful in understanding if or when to meet with a fertility doctor.
I am not going to share my exact results on here because it is a very personal matter. However, I am glad I have the information to understand my body and so when we are ready to have children, we will be prepared and ready.
Bottomline, whether you are trying to get pregnant now or want to in the future knowing where you stand now helps you to be proactive when thinking about the future and for me that is empowering!
